In general terms, the process of making lights for wheels can be described as follows:

  1. we buy LED tape;
  2. we make cuts in the right places and fasten the batteries;
  3. we wind the received preparation on wheels spokes.

Of course, in practice, cycling with your own hands cannot be done so quickly. But, nevertheless, everyone can do it.

What materials will we need?

To do cycle tuning, you need to purchase:

  • LED strip;
  • AAA batteries (12 pieces);
  • 4 holders for these batteries (as you probably already guessed, each is designed for 3 batteries);
  • wire;
  • solder;
  • hot glue;
  • four resistors (resistance of 10 ohms each);
  • rubber bands (they can be made from old bicycle cameras).

What tools do you need to stock up on?

Cycle tuningTo work with the above materials, we need the following tools:

  • soldering iron;
  • hot glue gun;
  • razor;
  • multimeter;
  • clippers;
  • sharp nose pliers;

First difficulties

At the very beginning of work on the backlight, the following difficulty arises: how to make the tape run on batteries? Unfortunately, in order for the cycling to succeed, you will have to practically reassemble the tape with your own hands. If you didn’t have to work with such devices before, then it will be useful for you to watch the corresponding training videos.

So, we can make our LED strip battery powered by connecting LEDs in a parallel way without a resistor. Thus, we will have only one resistor for all the LEDs, this approach will reduce the amount of work on remaking the tape with your own hands.

As an example, take a voltage supply voltage of 3 x 1.5 volts, i.e. 4.5 volts, the voltage on the LEDs is 2.8 V, and the current strength is 13 x 13.7 mA = 178 mA, where 13 is the number of LEDs. The resistance of our resistor is 10 ohms. According to the formula, the voltage will be equal: the difference between the external and internal voltage divided by the strength of the current, as a result: (4.5 - 2.8): 0.178, therefore, the voltage is 9.5 Ohms.

As an example, take the wheels of a 26-inch bicycle. To make the bike cycling such a wheel, we need 33 inches of tape.

Next, you need to make cuts in isolation at a distance of 2.5 inches from each other. To do this, you may need a razor, wire cutters and pliers. The result was a ribbon, as in the picture.

Next, we use batteries to determine where on each of the LEDs there is a “plus”.After that, insert the LED in a plastic tube and wrap the tape around the wires. Then the structure needs to be soldered.

Finding out which of the wires has a positive charge, solder the red wire of the batteries to it, and connect the black wire with other wires.

Next, connect the wire and the packaging of the batteries with hot glue. Glue is also necessary to process and place of soldering to create insulation. As a result, you should have a construction like in the picture.

Notice how the batteries are fixed in the picture. Such a fixation contributes to the fact that they sit quite tightly, and at the same time easily fall out. It remains only to wrap our ribbon around the spokes of a bicycle - and you can go.
