Competition for the right to build the “Island of Science” in Lithuania will be continued by three firms
The Government of Lithuania has announced three winners of the project competition of the National Center for Science and Innovations, which will informally be called the “Island of Science”. The competition, organized by the consulting agency Malcolm Reading Consultants, was the most widespread of such events in Lithuania - 144 teams of architects took part in it.
The “Island of Science” is supposed to be built in the center of Kaunas, the famous university city marked by UNESCO. The science center will be located on the territory of 13 thousand square meters. m on the island of Nemunas on the Neman River, near Ѕalgiris Arena and within walking distance of the historic district of Kaunas Centras.
The new complex, valued at € 25 million, will engage in environmental and ecosystem research and “draw attention to the latest advances in science and technology to inspire visitors to acquire new knowledge and support innovation.”
The winners are:
SMAR Architecture Studio (Australia and Spain)
SimpsonHaugh and Partners (United Kingdom)
Donghua Chen Studio (China)
The winning teams will have to go through the process of discussion and approval of the project in the Kaunas municipality, which will elect the only option for implementation. Each of the three winners will receive a reward of € 15,000.
